Cressida Cowell’s top drawing tips

Author and illustrator Cressida Cowell shares her tips for bringing drawings to life.

Did you know Waterstones Children’s Laureate Cressida Cowell draws her own illustrations for her How to Train Your Dragon book series?

She’s got some great tips for budding young artists to help them draw their character for our recent Friday family challenge:

  1. Be creative.
Draw from your heart, and don’t worry if it's not perfect. You could use a pencil first, which is better for sketching.
  2. Give your character emotion.
Think about how your character might be feeling. If you want a character’s face to express a particular emotion, have a look in the mirror and watch what your face does when you show that emotion. That’s a trick that animators use.
  3. Practice!
Draw lots of different things to find your style - people, animals, footballs. Remember, nobody’s born a brilliant illustrator. People become brilliant because they practise a lot.

To take part in this challenge we’d like you to draw your favourite character from any book you’ve enjoyed.

So, get your pens and paper out and get drawing! Share your drawings on Twitter at @PLCommunities using #PLPrimaryStars or drop us an email at PLPrimaryStars@premierleague.com
We will feature some of the best on our Premier League Primary Stars community page and on PremierLeague.com!
